How to crop or trim any image with clipping masks in Layout

This sketchup video tutorial is the part of sketchup skill builder series. The video provides useful guidelines on how to apply Clipping Masks in LayOut.

LayOut offers an easy to follow process for trimming, or ‘cropping’, image and it is known as clipping masks.

The video also teaches you to utilize the LayOut drawing tools to draw clipping mask boundaries to adjust the shape of your SketchUp viewports. Besides, apply them to crop an image or photo easily that is included with your LayOut document.

It is possible to mask out a part of a model or image by producing a clipping mask. While generating a clipping mask, only the part of the model or image will be visible that shows up inside a shape.

Any Google SketchUp model or image can contain a clipping mask. Clipping masks can be any shapes which are sketched with tools in LayOut.

For simple cropping, a rectangle is mostly suitable.

How to install Plugins in SketchUp

This is guidance for everyone who has just begun to explore to vast world of plugins and new to SketchUp. You all can find every possible method for installing plugins in SketchUP. It is trouble free and easy. It is also familiar for the BEGGINER users who use various apps and dig about their computer innards.

There are some of our much known communities driven, like Plugin Index, Didier Bur’s Ruby Depot or Smustard; you can choose one from them. But installing these for the first time it can be little tricky for new users and sometimes it can be frustrating when the things are not clear from the outset.

  1. Installing RBZ files in SketchUp: After the release of SketchUp 8 M2 the clever folks at SketchUp introduce a new file format (.rbz) which made installing plugins a one click operation so that you can install plugins from within SketchUp itself.

Click the Window menu and select Preferences to display a dialog box. Then select Extensionsfrom the sidebar lists to active and inactive plugins currently installed. Then click Install Extension to navigate to the .rbz downloaded file. A warning dialog will ask to confirm to install this plugin and make changes your file system. Click Yes and the installation will be successful.

  1. Installing RB files in SketchUp:The.rbformat is a simple text file written in the ruby language that is saved as a ruby file. These can come in varying complexity. Some are in simple single file that will add a menu item. While others contain folders with multiple files in zipped format that may add toolbar and all sort of goodies. Whether it is about PC or Mac users first they have to select the location of SketchUp Plugins folder.

Mac users need to know that it is a common misconception that the plugins folder is located with the SketchUp package.

With our plugins folder installing any plugin is a simple drag and drop procedure from your default browser download folder location to the SketchUp Plugins folder. If SketchUp is already running just restart it to appear of plugin.

Some handy sketchup tips for newbie sketchup users

The newbie sketchup users will be greatly benefitted by watching the following sketchup video tutorial presented by Justin Geis. In this sketchup tutorial Geis will introduce you with top 10 sketchup tips.

1. Apply Keyboard shortcuts: Every tool in SketchUp is supported with keyboard shortcuts. You don’t require to click on icons to obtain different types of tools in sketchup through these shortcuts. Beside, these shortcuts can reduce your modeling time significantly.

2. Move along axes: It is frequently required to shift objects both up and down and left and right concurrently. While trying to shift an object in both directions simultaneously, your object may not proceed at the desired location. Therefore, it is suggested to shift your objects along the red and green axes initially, then along the blue axis (or alternatively), so that you can get your objects to shift according to your choice.

3. Move with inferencing (Kitchen Example): While moving objects throughout SketchUp, sometimes it become complicated to procure objects to go in the exact position in a 3D space as per your choice. To make this process simple, apply inferencing to shift objects around. Inferencing is SketchUp’s way of helping you move objects around. As for instance, when you prefer to move a table and chairs with the purpose of aligning them with the end of a cabinet – you can choose and shift your objects by holding the shift key to lock along an axis, then move the mouse over the cabinet end and click to set your objects in your desired location.

4. Utilize the 3D Warehouse: SketchUp contains an extensive library of free models which can be imported into your model instantly. Highlight your modeling time on modeling spaces, and download furniture and other interior objects from the warehouse as much as possible to save significant modeling time.

5. Model with groups: When objects do not remain in groups, faces are merged, you have to face problem. If you group your geometry, your objects will not be merged with other objects and you will be able to make modifications instantly and efficiently.

6. Model with components: A component belongs to an object and when you copy it, any modification occurred in one copy will be updated in all the other copies as well. If you wish to have more than one of something in a model, create it as a component. If it is not required to create a copy of something, it will be a group.

7. Use Copy Mode: The move tool and the rotate tool can be utilized to generate copies of geometry. By clicking the control key with these tools active, the copies can be produced.

8. Generate multiple copies simultaneously: Besides, producing single copies, the move and rotate tools can also be applied to generate multiple copies. While making a copy of an object, just type “*” and the number of copies to be produced, then press the enter key to generate that number of copies. It is possible to modify the number of copies by hitting “*” and a new number, then the enter key provided that the tool is still active.

Watch the video, presented by Justin Geis.

9. Generate equally spaced copies among two points (Fence Posts): Besides, producing multiple copies, it is also possible to set an end point, then hit the divided by key and put a number of copies to generate equally spaced copies among two points

10. Apply extensions: SketchUp and SketchUcation both contain extensive warehouses of extensions which can be set up in SketchUp to make its functionality superior. Use new extensions in spite of native tools, to extend your modeling skills.

It is another simple description about the SketchUp plugins, where we find 10 different SketchUp plugins, its designing process in GIFs that are in the following link:

The following SketchUp plugins are used in various processes and created by experts to make the SketchUp tool more attractive and helpful for architects and designers. They can now use Google locations also to create an appropriate design, the view, basic points and finishing would be easier.

After the successful 6th edition in 2007, SketchUp has become one of the world’s most widely used 3D modeling software products. This success was possible for its intuitive toolbar, interdisciplinary use within the creative industry and for a free version that doesn’t use watermarks. Its open source library helped the software provide a wide range of 3D objects, while hundred of users developed their own plugins not only to solve the problems of each version but also to exploit the potential of their tools.

This article is about the 10 new and really useful SketchUp plugins that will make any design much better than before. Follow the link for the GIFs:

  1. Multiple Offsets v4: This plugin creates multiple offsets of selected surfaces in a model. And it is created by Sam D Mitch.
    2. Angular Dimension: It seems very basic and simple and this wasn’t included with SketchUp, but this was actually done by someone who took the time to program a plugin to fix it. It allows drawing angles and calculating on the surface of a volume. It is developed by SLBaumgartner.
  2. Chain alongPath: It is created by 3dalbertsoft, helps to create a helical turbine by selecting a curve and a predefined shape in SketchUp. From a dialog window numerous parameters can be chosen to create the final shape. It is quite useful to define seams, seals, springs, tensioners and cables.
    4. LSS Matrix: It is created by Kirill B and it is used to create a sequence of chained components by simply updating the parent block.
    5. Quad Face Tool: It is created by ThomThom, and it solves one of SketchUp’s major shortcomings that are its trouble working with non-flat surfaces. With this tool it is easy to create figures with continuous edges as topographies, or give a much more real surface to a helmet that was originally reticulated.
  1. Location: This useful tool helps to choose the satellite image of the place where the project is going to end up by entering an exact address in Google Maps. Then, with a click, it is easy to replicate the actual topography of that location.
    7. Sketchy FFD: It is created by CPhillips and it helps to create an invisible control cage around an object. Actually it is a mesh defined by a series of points in its vertices and edges that helps to manipulate the dimensions of a selected object.
    8. Components: It is created by Chris Fullmer, and it allows replicating a component onto a surface. It is highly recommended for designing parameterized facades.
    9. Camer Tools: It is also created by ThomThom, and it offers a series of new cameras for projects’ animations.
    10. Curviloft: It is created by Fred06, and generates parameterized volumes when a series of curves on a 3D model is selected. After creating, it offers nine different possibilities, including the possibility to redefine its final thickness. It is very useful for designing furniture.

How to Improve the SketchUp Skills

SketchUp has been providing an essential platform to the 3D modeling designers for decades. The easy-to-use features and functions made the application one of the most popular designing aids across the world. The intuitive working tools and the advantage of using accessories generated by users, including open source libraries and plugins, solve the complexities of 3D modeling and offer you an understandable way to create designs as per your requirement. Drawing designs on SketchUp is so easier that even children at their nascent designing stage are exposed to the architectural designs.

SketchUp has proven to be a great application for the beginners as its functions are made user-friendly and simple. Due to its simple approaches to the designing, SketchUp has faced difficulties to fulfil the requirements of designers at their advanced stages. Many would consider the application as a ‘rookie tool’ and feel a need for replacing this designing aid with comparably advanced ones such as Revit, Rhino, and AutoCAD. To change the scenario and to hook budding designers with them, SketchUp started evaluating with time by launching new plugins and increasing a greater user interface. With an array of creative and innovative functions, the application is successfully offering organized and efficient ways for making designs more prominent and efficient.

The content discusses on particularities of SketchUp application that allows you to design, adding real and vibrant details easily. The object of the discussion is to make the designing code simplified for you that ensures you to draw your imagination like an expert designer.

  1. 3D warehouse gallery: 3D warehouse comes inevitably with Sketchup as a distribution platform to promote 3D modeling designs. The gallery contains different 3D models designed by other users and it welcomes you to choose the right design for your designing project. This eliminates the necessities of using lines, layers and materials in your design. Thus, you can also reduce the file size.
  2. Place the model rightly in space: Conceptualizing a project as per the real location is a necessary work of an architecture. SketchUp gives you the needed reference of geo-location to analyze your plan according to the location. For placing your 3D model in a particular location, use the geo-referencing tool that can be accessible from window> model information>geolocation>add your preferred location.
  3. Plugins in extension warehouse: Plugins are best to give you a magnificent experience in 3D designing. With each version, SketchUp launches an array of plugins to solve the shortcoming of previous versions. They not only offer a new brunch of features but also enhance the efficiency of existing tools. Solar north is such an extension that allows you to change the direction of solar angle as per your design for adding a realistic view to the details. Sketchy FFD is another extension that looks after the dimension of the selected objects.
  4. Organize and save tool bar: Organizing a toolbar lets you manage and save your preferred options for the next use. It cuts down and offers you a better working environment. The process needs time to select the functions of your choice, but the end result will definitely give benefits in designing things instantly. This lets you perform your work efficiently with giving a keen attention to designs and concepts.
  5. Groups and Components for making editing easier: Using Group proves to be very beneficial in editing. It organizes your models into groups of objects and figures. You can easily change a particular portion of a model without disturbing the rest of the design. Using group in SketchUp needs just a few clicks – secondary button>create a group.
  6. Use layers, but not many: A small number of layers have been enough to control the element on the screen. Hiding layers, which are of no use, allows you to perform work in SketchUp smoothly. In case of importing models designed by others in your project, you need to take extra care and time to delete layers. Deleting those helps you reduce the file size.
  7. Reference point for enhancing accuracy: For creating or duplicating an element from your design, reference points can be handy. It also increases an accuracy of designs and makes your project flawless. For duplicating an object of your design, select the element and choose the reference point in space. Press the control key for activating the copy mode. In case of new element, use ‘measure tool’ for inserting a guide. Click on the beginning of an existing edge and its extension.
  8. Keyboard shortcut: Keyboard shortcuts make you speedy for accessing tool and needed functions. SketchUp has some existing shortcuts, they can be customizable though.
  9. Appropriate Visual style: For adding artistic details to your design, visual graphic style gives the essential effects to your 3D drawing. Agreeing the fact that effects make any design realistic, this tool always stays at the top in designers’ preference list.
  10. Use scene manager to set a view: Scene manager option is for adding or deleting view points as per your project. This also helps you create new camera angles to give your design a better visual effect. For choosing the right tool, Place Camera helps you understand the different camera angles by analyzing camera’s height with respect to the ground.
